Cutting and trimming

Cut at the playhead, delete and ripple delete, trim edges, trim to the playhead, in and out marks, lift and extract, close gaps.

Every edit here is one undo step (⌘Z), works the same from the keyboard, the right-click menus, the command palette and the agent, and keeps V1 gapless.

Cut and delete

Cut at the playhead and ripple delete · 0:03
Description

The AI trailer, zoomed into its first two shots. The playhead is put inside Sunburst tunnel and ⌘B cuts every targeted track there, so the shot and the title over it each become two clips. The right half of the shot is clicked and Shift+Backspace ripple-deletes it: the rest of the sequence slides left to close the gap.

  1. Click the ruler where the cut goes (or move the playhead with ← → a frame at a time, Shift for ten).
  2. Press ⌘B (Add edit at playhead). Every targeted track is cut there; with clips picked, only those. ⌘⇧B cuts every track whatever is targeted.
  3. Click the part you don't want.
  4. Press Shift+Backspace to ripple delete it: what follows on the track slides left to close the gap. Plain Backspace deletes it and leaves the gap (on V1 the gap always closes).

The razor tool (C) cuts a clip where you click it; Shift-click cuts every track there. Right-click a clip → Cut here does the same at the playhead (or where you clicked).

Trim

Trim a clip, and trim to the playhead · 0:05
Description

The AI trailer’s V1 track. Dragging the right edge of Shapes snap to the left shortens it, and the scenes after it follow because V1 is magnetic. Then the playhead is moved into Brush strokes and W trims its tail to the playhead; Q trims its head the same way.

  1. Drag a clip's left or right edge to trim it. On V1 the scenes after it follow; on V2 and up only that clip changes. With snapping on (S), edges snap to other edits, markers and the playhead.
  2. To trim to the playhead, put the playhead inside a clip and press W (Ripple trim end to playhead): its tail goes and what follows moves up.
  3. Q (Ripple trim start to playhead) does the same to its head.

A trim never stretches a clip past its source: a scene can't play more than its frame's timeline, nor a video more than its file. For a ripple trim on V2 and up, use the ripple edit tool (B).

In, out, lift and extract

Mark in and out, then extract the range · 0:03
Description

The AI trailer. I marks an in point at the playhead and O an out point a little later, and the header shows the range. The apostrophe key extracts it: everything between the marks is removed from every track and what follows closes up. A semicolon would lift it instead, leaving a gap.

  1. Put the playhead where the range starts and press I (Mark in).
  2. Move it to where it ends and press O (Mark out). The header shows the range in timecode.
  3. Press ' to extract it: everything between the marks goes from every unlocked track, and the rest closes up. Press ; to lift it instead: the clips go but the gap stays.
  4. ⌘⇧X clears the marks.

Close a gap

Right-click the gap on a V2+ or audio track → Close gap, or run Close gap from the command palette at the playhead. Everything after it on that track moves left.
