The tools
Selection, ripple edit, razor, slip, slide and rate stretch, as a video editor has them; moving clips between tracks.
The six tools are in the timeline header; each has a key. Hover one for what it does.
Description
A walkthrough of the Edit timeline’s tools on the AI trailer. Selection (V) drags a title card along V2. Ripple edit (B) trims a shot’s end and the scenes after it follow. Razor (C) cuts a clip where it is clicked. Slip (Y) changes which part of a shot plays without moving it. Slide (U) moves a title between its neighbours. Rate stretch (R) drags a title’s edge to change its speed.
- Selection (V): drag a clip to move it, along its track or up and down to another one; drag an edge to trim. Click picks a clip, ⌘-click adds to the pick, Shift-click toggles one in or out of it, Esc clears it.
- Ripple edit (B): drag an edge to trim; everything after it on the track moves to follow.
- Razor (C): click a clip to cut it there. Shift-click cuts every track.
- Slip (Y): drag a clip to change which part of its source it shows; it stays where it is and keeps its length.
- Slide (U): drag a clip on V2 or above along its track; the clips either side trim to follow.
- Rate stretch (R): drag a clip's edge to change its speed, keeping all of its source: shorter plays faster.
Snapping (S), the magnet after the tools, snaps drags to edits, markers and the playhead.
Move a clip to another track
Description
The AI trailer. The KA-POW shot is dragged up from V1 to V3: a ghost shows where it will land while it moves, and once dropped it sits on V3 over the shots below, free to move left and right. V1 closes up behind it.
- Drag a clip up or down. A ghost shows the track and time it will land on.
- Drop it. On V2 and up it sits where you dropped it and moves freely left and right, over the shots below. Taken off V1, the scenes after it close up.
- To put a layer back in the main sequence, drag it down to V1 (it goes in where you drop it) or right-click it → Move into V1 sequence. Right-click a scene → Move to V2 (place freely) goes the other way.
A clip dropped over others on V2 and up overwrites the part it covers. To make room instead, drop scenes and files from the bin with Alt held: that inserts, pushing later clips right.
Ripple with the selection tool
Hold Alt while dragging an edge with the selection tool to ripple-trim, as the ripple tool does.
Roll edits
A roll moves a cut between two scenes: one gets longer by what the other loses, and nothing else moves. It is an
edit for the agent, CLI, API and plugins ({ "kind": "roll" }); on the timeline, trim the
two edges.
