Source monitor and three-point editing
Open a scene from the bin in the source monitor, mark the part you want, and insert or overwrite it into the sequence on any track.
The source monitor lets you watch a scene before it goes in the sequence and take only the part you want. It is Premiere's three-point edit: a source in, a source out, and where it goes in the sequence.
Description
The AI trailer in Edit with the bin open. The monitor icon on the KA-POW scene opens it in the source monitor: the canvas shows the scene and the timeline makes way for the source controls. The scrubber is dragged, In and Out are marked around a stretch of it, V1 is the target and Insert puts that stretch into the sequence at the playhead, pushing the rest later; the sequence comes back with the new clip in place.
- In the bin, click the monitor icon on a scene (on a phone it is always shown). The canvas plays that scene, and the timeline makes way for the source controls.
- Drag the scrubber or press Space to play. Press I (or click In) where the part starts and O (or Out) where it ends. Without marks, the whole scene is used.
- Pick the track it goes to: V1 (the main track) or a track above it.
- Insert (comma) puts it in and pushes everything after it later. Overwrite (period) puts it over what is there, keeping the sequence's length.
It goes at the sequence's in mark when there is one, else where the sequence's playhead was when you opened the source. Afterwards the sequence comes back with its playhead just after the new clip, ready for the next one. Sequence (or Esc) goes back without an edit.
On V1, which has no gaps, an insert splits the scene under the playhead and the new clip goes between the two halves; an overwrite takes out the scenes the new clip covers.
Match frame and replace
Match frame (F, or right-click a clip → Match frame) opens the picked clip's scene, or V1's scene under the playhead, in the source monitor at the moment the sequence shows there: take another part of the same shot from where you are.
Description
The AI trailer’s timeline with the playhead part way into the KA-POW shot. The shot is picked and F pressed: the source monitor opens on the KA-POW scene at the same moment it shows in the sequence.
To swap what a clip shows without moving it, pick the clip, then right-click a scene in the bin and choose Replace the picked clip. It keeps its place, length, Motion, effects and fades; only its source changes.
Scale to frame
A scene of another size than the sequence (a vertical video in a widescreen sequence, say) shows at its own size. Right-click it and choose Scale to frame → Fill the frame (scaled to cover the stage, its edges cropped) or Fit in the frame (all of it shown, bars where it is narrower). It sets the clip's Motion scale, so you can still adjust it.
From the agent, the CLI, the API and plugins these are the sourceEdit, replace and fit edits. sourceEdit takes frame, in, out, at, track and mode; replace takes clip and frame; fit takes clip and
mode (fill or fit). See Agent, CLI, API and plugins.
